The long awaited release of one of the most anticipated drum and bass tracks of 2024 is finally here: S.P.Y’s ‘Spire’, back to back with the heavy ‘Alien Bass’. If you’ve been at any drum and bass festival in the past year you would have heard the pumping, face scrunching, heart thumping weight of ‘Spire’ shaking the speakers. A favourite in S.P.Y’s sets, ‘Alien Bass’ is the brutal accompaniment, getting deeper, darker and really hitting that sci-fi sound. S.P.Y always brings the goods and this release is the cherry on the top of a wicked year.

Completely different from anything S.P.Y has ever created, ‘Spire’ was originally produced to be played in his sets, with no intention of a release. Setting himself a challenge, S.P.Y wanted to see if he could create a track using the current sound of jump up bassline, while still retaining his unique S.P.Y sound. The end result is a track that is minimalistic and clean, but wickedly technical and deeply heavy. The track begins with a drawn out, atmospheric intro, building a sense of suspense and mystery, an intense build up that drops into a bassline so heavy it feels like it will rip your face off. Anyone who was at Boomtown this year will know, ‘Spire’ was the talk of the festival. When the bass dropped on that insane rig and the flames shot up, it was truly special. If you know, you know!

Following on from ‘Spire’ is ‘Alien Bass’, a minimal, rolling tune than really amps up the sci-fi flavour. This track sounds like nothing from this planet, every sound is weird and strange, warping and creating an otherworldly alien soundscape. The vintage vocal is the perfect eerie overlay to the track, creating a sense of doom. The track builds steadily before dropping into a screeching, grinding alien bassline, with glitchy sounds and experimental beats layering up to create a truly wicked track.

This double header of ‘Spire’ and ‘Alien Bass’ is a December treat for anyone who’s been awaiting the release of these massive tracks. DJ’s have been rinsing them, S.P.Y has been dropping them and footage has been shared all across socials of crowds going off to these tunes. We’re used to only the highest quality tunes from S.P.Y, but this release is truly something special.
